January 1, 1889 - Crime History
A bill was passed so that from this point forward, condemned criminals in New York would be electrocuted instead of hanged. Public reaction to the bill was mixed, and by Spring it seemed doomed, having suffered several amendments that left it a shell of its former self. But on May 8, the final day of the legislative session, Senator Henry Coggleshell maneuvered the bill back into its original form and got it passed with a voice vote. Such political gymnastics were uncommon, but raised few eyebrows in an era known for greed and graft. Governor Hill signed the bill on June 5, and it was set to become law on January 1, 1889.
January 1, 1974 - Edmund Kemper
On November 8, the six-man, six-woman jury deliberated for five hours, says Frazier, before finding Kemper sane and guilty of eight counts of first-degree murder. Although Kemper hoped to receive the death penalty, he was convicted during a time when the Supreme Court had placed a moratorium on capital punishment and all death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. The death penalty became applicable only to crimes committed after January 1, 1974. Everitt says that the judge asked him what he thought his punishment should be. It wasn't difficult for him to come up with something, as he'd been thinking about this moment since childhood. He told the judge that he believed he ought to be tortured to death.
January 1, 2000 - Ian Brady and Myra Hindley
In the last days of 1999, Myra , age 57, was briefly released from Highpoint Prison in Suffolk to West Suffolk Hospital to undergo tests after she collapsed. Prison officials were concerned that she may have suffered a stroke. However, hospital spokesman said, "Hospital doctors have decided that the patient is fit enough to be discharged into the care of the Prison Service." Myra smokes heavily and suffers from angina and high blood pressure. On January 1, 2000, it was announced that Hindley was going to take her life imprisonment battle to the House of Lords. At this time, Myra had served more than 33 years in jail. Ian Brady, age 61, had gone on a 3-month hunger strike, hoping to kill himself rather than die in prison.
January 1, 2007 - Leonard Fraser
QUEENSLAND, Australia — Last week Convicted serial killer Leonard Fraser, 55, was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital after complaining of chest pains. His condition continued to deteriorate and at 3.20am (AEST) he went into cardiac arrest and died. Prior to his hospitalization last week, Fraser was serving a life sentence for the murders of three Rockhampton women and a schoolgirl. Following the announcement of his death, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, spoke briefly with members of the press. "I don't think there will be a great deal of sympathy for him," Beattie said. "His crimes were horrific and while no one likes to see someone pass away ... I don't think there will be a lot of grieving over his passing. I don't think anyone will be shedding any tears." A standard inquest will now be conducted to rule out the possibility of foul play.
January 1, 2007 - Another Skeleton Unearthed
NOIDA, India — Yet another skeleton has been unearthed from a drainage ditch in a Noida village, bringing the total number of victims to seventeen. Only ten victims have been identified. Due to public outcry, Secretary R M Srivastava has ordered an inquiry into the investigation. Many people are questioning how the suspects were able to remain undetected, as the number of missing children continued to rise.
January 2, 1978 - Ted Bundy
Bundy then caught an Amtrak train to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he got a room at the YMCA. On January 2, 1978, he went to an Ann Arbor bar and watched his former University of Washington Huskies beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl. He later stole a car in Ann Arbor, which he abandoned in Atlanta, Georgia before boarding a bus for Tallahassee, Florida, where he arrived on January 8, 1978. There, he rented a room at a boarding house under the alias of "Chris Hagen" and committed numerous petty crimes including shoplifting, purse snatching, and auto theft. He stole a student ID card that belonged to a Kenneth Misner and sent away for copies of Misner's Social Security card and birth certificate.
January 2, 1938 - Ian Brady and Myra Hindley
Ian Brady was born, on 2 January 1938 in Gorbals, one of the roughest slums in Glasgow at the time. His mother, Margaret (Peggy) Stewart was a tearoom waitress in a hotel. Although she was single, she would always sign herself as Mrs. Stewart; as to be an unmarried mother at this time met with strong disapproval. Peggy never disclosed who Ian's father was, except that he was a journalist for a Glasgow newspaper who had died a few months before Ian was born. With no husband to support her, she found it necessary to continue working as a waitress, even if only part-time. As she was often unable to afford a babysitter, Peggy would sometimes have to leave baby Ian at home alone. It did not take her long to realise that she could not cope with her baby alone. To solve the problem she advertised for a permanent babysitter to take Ian into their home, providing the care and attention she was unable to give him. Mary and John Sloane answered the advertisement. They had four children of their own and seemed trustworthy and caring. At the age of four months, Ian was unofficially "adopted" by the couple. Peggy signed over Ian's welfare payments to them and arranged to visit every Sunday. As each Sunday came around Peggy would bring gifts for her growing son but never told him that she was his mother. Mary Sloane was always "auntie" or "ma." As time passed, Peggy's visits became less frequent and finally stopped altogether when Ian was twelve years old. Peggy had moved with her new husband, Patrick Brady, to Manchester . The ambiguity of his relationship with his mother and the nature of the arrangements with the Sloanes meant that Ian always felt that he didn't really belong. Despite the Sloanes' attempts to provide a loving environment, Ian showed no response to their care and attention. Throughout his childhood, he was lonely, difficult, and angry. Temper tantrums were frequent and extreme, often ending with him banging his head on the floor. At Camden Street Primary School , Brady was considered by his teachers to be a bright child, but he never tried as hard as he could have. The other children saw him as different, secretive and an outsider. He didn't play sport like the other boys and was considered a "sissy."
January 2 , 1979 - Richard Chase
On January 2, 1979, the trial began. Chase was charged with six counts of murder. The prosecutor emphasized throughout the trial that Chase had had a choice, and mentioned several times that he had brought rubber gloves with him to the victims' homes with the intent of murder. Altogether, there were 250 prosecution exhibits, the strongest of which were Chase's gun and Dan Meredith's wallet, found in Chase's pocket.
January 2 , 1990 - Arthur Shawcross
Nothing happened on New Year's Day, but the next day, January 2, 1990, the State Police resumed the search for a body by air and ground. When winds came up from Lake Ontario, making it impossible to see in the blowing snow, they had to abort it. But the following morning, they were at it again. Yet after hours spent covering the same ditches, canals, and creeks, the search was beginning to seem futile. They had looked everywhere. Wherever these women were, they were likely under snow. No one was going to find them until after a thaw.
January 2 , 2007 - Serial Killer Suspect
MUMBAI, INDIA — Police have released a composite sketch of a serial killer, they suspect of murdering six people over the last four months. According to investigators, the suspect is thought to be 25-30 years old. "He kills his victims staying on the streets in Azad Maidan and Marine Drive by crushing their heads with a stone and stabbing them," Additional Commissioner of Police D Kanakratnam said in an interview with the Daily News & Analysis. One of the officers working the case said the murders reminded him of Raman Raghav, a serial killer who murdered nine people in the 1960s.
January 2 , 2007 - Ivan Hill
LOS ANGELES, Cali. — On Nov. 17, 2006, a jury convicted accused serial killer Ivan Hill, 45, of six counts of first-degree murder. Today that same jury recommended the death penalty six times over. Sentencing has been scheduled for March 21. His attorneys are already planning an appeal.
January 3, 1977 - Carlton Gary
On January 3, 1977, a 55-year-old white woman named Jean Frost is believed to have had the great misfortune of meeting Carlton Gary. She had just had a birthday and was asleep when a noise jerked her awake. Blinking into the darkness, she made out a man standing in her bedroom doorway. Then he jumped on top of her. A panicked Frost tried to escape from her attacker and he angrily told her, “You shouldn't have struggled.” He ripped her nightgown and shoved part of it into her mouth. Repeatedly and furiously, he hit the older woman in the face as she choked on the crude gag. Despite the darkness, Frost was certain she saw that her attacker was a mustachioed black man. Then he wrapped a scarf around her neck, choked her, and she blacked out.
January 3, 2003 - John Wolfenbarger & Dennis Lincoln
The uncle of John Wolfenbarger, a 31-year-old man accused of killing a Michigan family of five, testified in a preliminary hearing that his nephew bragged that he had done something that would make the national news. Wolfenbarger's uncle, William Smith, 36, of Detroit, said that he went to police after his nephew came to his home late on the night of the killings looking for a change of clothes and bragged that he did something that should appear on CNN.
January 3, 2003 - Huang Hu
Chinese authorities executed the owner of a failing kindergarten for mixing rat poison into salt at a rival school's kitchen and sickening 70 children. Huang Hu, 29, was executed in Zhanjiang, a city in Guangdong province, which borders Hong Kong. He was convicted in mid-December after a swift prosecution. Huang owned a failing kindergarten in the nearby city of Wuchuang and blamed competition from a nearby school. He crept into its kitchen Nov. 24 and put poison in salt that was used to make corn porridge. Students and teachers who ate the tainted food suffered spasms and vomiting. Seventy children and two teachers were hospitalized, but all were treated and released.
January 3, 2003 - Moo Chul Shin
A man stabbed his ex-girlfriend, her husband and two daughters, killing the woman and one child before police found him in a New York motel room with his wrists slashed. The killer, 30-year-old Moo Chul Shin, stabbed to death Sook Kim, 34, and Kim's 7-year-old daughter, Clara, in their apartment in the New York borough of Queens. Shin, of Springfield, Virginia, also allegedly stabbed Kim's 8-year-old daughter Estelle, who remained hospitalized in critical condition. He later attacked Kim's 38-year-old husband, Hyunsik Kim, stabbing him on the neck as he prepared to start his work day driving a fruit delivery truck.
January 3, 2003 - Anthony Hardy
Police investigating the murders of two women whose body parts were found in garbage containers in Candem, North London, arrested their main suspect, Anthony Hardy. The 53-year-old suspect was caught on closed-circuit television at University College Hospital on Wednesday asking for medicine for a diabetes-related condition called peripheral neuropathy but left when staff began to query where he lived. Detectives believed that his quest for medication was their main chance of catching him.
January 3, 2007 - Robert Pickton
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — According to a Canadian assessment authority, property co-owned by accused serial killer Robert Pickton, 57, has dropped in value from $8.8 million last year, to $6.3 million this year. In 2003, the government placed a $10-million mortgage on the farm to pay for Pickton's defence. His trial is set to start on Jan. 22.
January 4, 1974 - Ted Bundy
Joni Lenz's roommates had not been particularly worried when they didn't see her in the morning of January 4, 1974. But when she still wasn't up and around that afternoon, they went into her basement bedroom to see if she was sick. A horrifying sight confronted them. Ann Rule in her now famous classic book on the subject, The Stranger Beside Me, wrote that Joni, 18, had been badly beaten. A bed rod had been torn away from the bed and savagely rammed into her vagina. Shortly after the discovery, Joni was transported to the hospital in a comatose state, suffering from damages that would affect her for the rest of her life. However, she was lucky to be alive. Joni was one of the few victims to survive an attack by Ted Bundy, who reigned terror across the United States between 1974 and 1978. There were an estimated 35 more victims after Joni who were not so fortunate. Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth in The Only Living Witness suggest that perhaps 40 young women may have fallen prey to Bundy, but only Bundy knew for sure. It is a number that Bundy has carried with him to his grave.
January 4, 1983 - Richard Fran Biegenwald
Biegenwald worked odd jobs for the next three years and kept a low profile. In 1977, Biegenwald was suspected in a rape, and was wanted for failing to report to his parole officer. Biegenwald was arrested in Brooklyn in 1980 on the rape charge, but was released after the victim failed to pick him out of a lineup. Biegenwald got married after being released, and he and his wife moved to Asbury Park, New Jersey. There, Biegenwald was befriended by Dherran Fitzgerald, who would play a role in several of his future murders. Biegenwald struck again on January 4, 1983, when he shot and killed 18-year-old Anna Olesiewicz in Ocean Township, New Jersey. He had found the young woman walking down the boardwalk in Asbury Park, and lured her into his car. Olesiewicz's body was found by children playing in a wooded lot behind a Burger King on Route 35 and Sunset Avenue, fully clothed with no signs of sexual assault and with four bullets in her head. A friend of Biegenwald's wife went to police after Biegenwald showed her another young woman's body that he had hidden inside his Asbury Park home's garage.
January 4, 2003 - Carl Knapp
A gunman shot and killed three people in an Albuquerque business district, then barricaded himself in a pawn shop for about three hours and shot himself in the chest. Carl Knapp, 48, was hospitalized for the wound, which was not life-threatening. Police accused Knapp of shooting two men and a woman in front of a warehouse in an area of northeast Albuquerque. The victims were identified as Jane Johnston, 42; Steven Goodwin, 49; and Greg McGuire, whose age was not immediately known. Authorities believe the killings were the result of a domestic violence situation.
January 4, 2003 - Four Dead in Virginia
A man in Richmond, Virginia, shot and killed his girlfriend and two convenience store workers before turning his assault rifle on himself. All four victims were declared dead in three different crime scenes. Police said the man went into a home in Richmond's Southside before 6 p.m. and shot his 27-year-old girlfriend in a bedroom as children and other relatives watched. The man then ran from the house several blocks to the Golden Food Market, where police said he shot and killed the owner of the store and an employee. According to police, the man then forced four men from the van they were sitting in outside the store and drove to a relative's house, where he shot and killed himself in front of several people.
January 4, 2003 - Three Dead in a Seattle Suburb
The bodies of three men were found in a vehicle along a highway in the Seattle suburb of Kent. Police do not know the men's identities or a possible motive for the slayings. Police also do not know if the victims were shot at that location. No one was in the driver's seat when the vehicle was found. Police were called to the scene to check on the dark green Chevy Tahoe after a neighbor reported that someone appeared to be sleeping on the passenger side.
January 4, 2007 - Petr Zelenka PRAGUE, Czech Republic — Suspected serial killer Petr Zelenka, 30, was arrested last month for committing seven murders, while working as a nurse at Havlickuv Brod Hospital. Since that time, police have connected him to ninth death. According to the Mlada fronta Dnes newspaper, Zelenka was arrested after he confessed to the crimes in September. Zelenka has also been charged with 10 attempted murders, the details of which are not yet known. A trial date has not been set.
January 4, 2007 - Edward Charles Wilkins
A Chatham County grand jury has re-indicted Edward Charles Wilkins, Jr., 32, for the murders of Jan Pringle, Charles Bolden and Jon Andra Wiggins. One of the three murders dates back to 1999. Each of the victims has a history of prostitution. Wilkins was originally arrested in 2003, but for unknown reasons the district attorney delayed the case. Wilkins trial is scheduled to start on January 29.
January 5, 1974 - Ted Bundy
Shortly after midnight on January 5, 1974, Bundy entered the basement bedroom of 18-year-old Joni Lenz (pseudonym), a dancer and student at the University of Washington. Bundy bludgeoned her with a metal rod from her bed frame while she slept, and sexually assaulted her with a speculum. Lenz was found the next morning by her roommates in a coma and lying in a pool of her own blood. She survived the attack, but suffered permanent brain damage. Bundy's next victim was Lynda Ann Healy, another University of Washington student. On the night of January 31, 1974, Bundy broke into Healy's room, knocked her unconscious, dressed her in jeans and a shirt, wrapped her in a bed sheet, and carried her away.
January 5, 1991 - Aileen Wuornos
The hunt for Wuornos began in earnest on January 5, 1991. Pairs of officers, including two undercover as "Bucket" and "Drums," drug dealers down from Georgia, hit the streets hoping to track her down. On the evening of January 8, Mike Joyner and Dick Martin, in their roles as "Bucket" and "Drums," spotted her at the Port Orange Pub. They meant for their takedown to develop gradually, as they wanted an airtight case, but Port Orange police entered suddenly and took Wuornos outside. Mike Joyner frantically phoned the command post at the Pirate's Cove Motel, where authorities from six jurisdictions had come to work the case. This development wasn't because of a leak, they surmised; these were just cops doing their jobs. Bob Kelley of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office called the Port Orange police station and told them not to arrest Wuornos under any circumstances. The word was relayed to the cops in the nick of time, and Wuornos returned to the bar. Joyner and Martin struck up a conversation with her and bought her a few beers. She left the bar at around 10:00, declining an offer for a ride. Once again, the cautious takedown was almost ruined. Two Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers pulled up behind Wuornos as she walked down Ridgwood Avenue, following her with their lights off. Officers at the command post made a call and got the FDLE officers off the street and Wuornos made it to her next destination, a biker bar called the Last Resort. Joyner and Martin met her there for a while, drank more beers, shot more bull. They left just after midnight. Wuornos didn't leave at all. She spent her last night of freedom sleeping on an old car seat in the Last Resort.
January 5, 2003 - Six Dead in Texas
Six men were shot to death in Edinburg, texas, in a home invasion attack. Police said they believe the assailants were searching for weapons and drugs. A witness, who was tied up during the shooting, told authorities that one of the assailants wore clothing with the word "police" on it. Five of the victims were found in one house; another was found in a second house on the same property.
January 5, 2003 - Edward Morris
After a two-week manhunt throughout Oregon, Edward Morris -- charged with killing his wife and three children and dumping their bodies in a forest -- was captured in a drug store parking lot here. Though Morris, 37, had been described as "armed and dangerous," he was arrested without incident. The bodies of his wife, 31-year-old Renee and his three children, Bryant, 10, Alexis, 8 and Jonathan, 4, were found by hunters December 21 on an isolated road about 70 miles west of Portland, in the Tillamook State Forest
January 5, 2003 - John Allen Muhammad
The Washington Post reported that prosecutors have linked sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad to at least two shootings, including one that left a man dead at a Virginia gas station. Citing four law enforcement sources who asked that they not be identified, the Post reported that investigators found Muhammad's fingerprint on a street map booklet found at the Manassas, Virginia, station where Dean Harold Meyers was killed October 9. Though the fingerprint on the map doesn't prove Muhammad fired the shot that killed Meyers, it does place him at the scene of the shooting.
January 5, 2007 - Thomas George Svekla Alberta, Canada — Earlier this week authorities charged Thomas George Svekla, 38, with the murders of two prostitutes. A 50-person police task force — assembled to investigate the deaths or disappearances of at least 25 sex-trade workers since 1978 — is examining other cases to see if Svekla might be connected to those as well. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Monday.
January 6, 2003 - Suspected Lousiana Serial Killer
Investigators in Baton Rouge have collected saliva samples from nearly 1,000 men in their effort to find a DNA match to that of a serial killer linked to the killings of four women. Joe Cook, executive director of the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union, said that the DNA dragnet raises questions about people's constitutional rights. "In this case, all these people are assumed guilty until they're proven innocent," Cook said. The probable cause to determine if someone should be approached to offer a DNA sample seems flimsy, often based on anonymous tips or the type of pickup truck a man drives, Cook added. "I don't think that's credible evidence to target someone. It's been proven time and again that this type of targeting is bad police work," Cook said, "the people who have come forward would appear to have been coerced."
January 6, 2003 - Robert Pickton
The BC Pork Producers released a written complaint about how the Pickton case was being reported by the media. Disturbed by the association of the alleged serial killer spree to Pickton's pig farm, the Pork Producers remarked that the property in question had, in fact, more sheep than pigs and that Pickton himself was not associated with their organization. "Consequently, having the words 'pig farm' associated with the Robert Pickton murder trial has been and continues to be very negative to our industry," stated the press release.
January 6, 2003 - Anthony Hardy
The London Ripper suspect, Anthony Hardy appeared in court was charged with three murders including the killings of two prostitutes whose body parts were found in trash containers in London's Candem area. Police also formally identified the second prostitute as 34-year-old Brigitte Cathy MacClennan. She is believed to have lived in Camden but originally came from New Zealand. The second victim was identified as 29-year-old Elizabeth Selina Valad, originally from Nottingham. The third murder charge was for the death of 38-year-old Sally Rose White who was found dead in his apartment more than a year ago. Detectives said the search for more victims connected with the case continues.
January 6, 2007 - THOMAS GEORGE SVEKLA
Authorities charged Thomas George Svekla, 38, with the murders of two prostitutes. A task force is currently examining other unsolved disappearances and murders to see if Svekla might be connected to those as well. Svekla's attorney, Robert Shaigec, spoke briefly with the Edmonton Sun today: "Our position is very clear: Mr. Svekla is not responsible for these deaths and he looks forward to his opportunity coming very quickly to begin defending these charges Monday morning in court." A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for next week.
January 7, 1896 - Joe Ball
Serial killer Joe Ball is born. Joe Ball decided on a career as a bootlegger, over working in a legitimate family business, after he graduated from the University of Texas. By the late 1920s he was the owner of the Sociable Inn, a saloon located near Elmendorf, Texas. In the course of several years Mr. Ball killed many people and fed his victims remains to the alligators he kept out back of his bar.
January 7, 2007 - Subodhan Kumar
Authorities have arrested Subodhan Kumar, 25, in the deaths of nine people, dating back to 1995. The arrest came following an illegal weapons charge. According to investigators, Kumar voluntarily confessed to the murders and led them to one of the victim's bodies. Kumar is the third serial killer arrested in India in the past two weeks. These recent cases seem to suggest India is becoming a haven for serial murderers.
January 7, 2007 - Turkish Businessman FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — A Turkish businessman was found dead in his hotel room today. According to news reports, his death marks the fifth unsolved homicide in Broward County this past week. Several overseas newspapers are reporting a serial killer is responsible. Florida authorities, however, have yet to comment on whether any of the deaths are related.
January 8, 1978 - Ted Bundy
Bundy then caught an Amtrak train to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he got a room at the YMCA. On January 2, 1978, he went to an Ann Arbor bar and watched his former University of Washington Huskies beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl. He later stole a car in Ann Arbor, which he abandoned in Atlanta, Georgia before boarding a bus for Tallahassee, Florida, where he arrived on January 8, 1978. He stole a student ID card that belonged to a Kenneth Misner and sent away for copies of Misner's Social Security card and birth certificate.
January 8, 2003 - Cannibalism in Congo
A U.N. team is investigating reports that rebel troops from the Congolese Liberation Movement and its allied Congolese Rally for Democracy-National have been killing and eating Pygmies in northeastern Congo. "The U.N. is taking these accusations very seriously," said Manodje Mounoubai of the U.N. mission in Congo. The six-person team has been sent to the mineral-rich areas of Ituri province to investigate the accusations. The two rebel factions often hire Pygmies to hunt food in the jungles as they fight the rival rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy-Liberation. If the hunters return empty-handed, rebel troops kill and eat them, the U.N. official said.
January 8, 2007 - Derrick Todd Lee BATON ROUGE, La. — A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that a Baton Rouge judge improperly ordered an innocent man to give DNA during the hunt for a serial killer. The ruling results from a lawsuit the man filed three years ago in a Baton Rouge federal court. Derrick Todd Lee was later arrested for the murders and is currently on death row. A conference has been scheduled for Feb. 15.
January 10, 1978 - Richard Chase
After viewing the police sketch of a disheveled man seen in the neighborhood wearing an orange ski parka, and recalling that Chase wore one that day the same color, she was sure this was the man the police were seeking. They also got another clue from the gun registration of a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun, sold in December 1977 to a Richard Chase on Watt Avenue. On January 10 th , he had purchased ammunition.
January 10, 2007 - Jagmeet Singh Brar
PUNJAB, India — The badly decomposed bodies of four children have been found at an abandoned mill owned by Jagmeet Singh Brar, an influential politician. According to Brar, he has no knowledge of what happened or where the bodies came from. The mill has been closed for the last five years. On January 11, 1978, Dawn Larson had a strange encounter with Chase. During the six months that they had been neighbors in the same East Sacramento apartment complex on Watt Avenue, she had seen him carry three animals into his apartment-against the rules-but had never seen those animals again. She thought him odd, but worried that he was lonely. He asked her for a cigarette. She gave him one, but he stopped her from walking away. When she gave him the rest of the pack, he let her go.
January 11 , 1979 - Kenneth Bianchi
Bianchi and Buono would cruise around Los Angeles in Buono's car and use fake badges to persuade girls that they were undercover cops. They would then order the girls into Buono's unmarked police car and drive them home to torture them. After being abused by both men the girls would be strangled. Other methods of killing such as lethal injection had been tried by the killers but would be rejected in favor of strangling. Even while the girls were being killed, Bianchi applied for a job with the Los Angeles Police Department and had even been taken for several rides with police officers while they were searching for the Hillside Strangler. After botching their eleventh murder, Angelo Buono decided to call it quits. Bianchi decided to move to Bellingham, Washington in May 1978 to join his girlfriend and son currently living there. On January 11, 1979, Bianchi lured two female Western Washington University students into a house he was guarding. He forced the first student down the stairs in front of him and then strangled her. He murdered the second young girl in a similar fashion. He had left so many clues police quickly tied him with the crime. A California driver's license linked him to the crimes in Los Angeles.
January 11, 2001 - Robert Yates
Pierce County hopes to begin case against Spokane serial killer Robert L. Yates Jr. in June of this year. Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty against Yates for the two murder cases against him in Tacoma. "I'll be honest with you, we didn't agonize over it," said Pierce County Prosecutor Gerald Horne "This is a compelling case to ask for the death penalty." Assistant Public Defender Richard Fasy who represented Yates in Spokane, said he was "deflated, disappointed and depressed by the decision." Fasy said it made no sense for the state to make a "spiteful and costly decision" to seek the death penalty against a man who's already condemned to die in prison. However, the victims' families applauded the decision. Fasy added he wasn't surprised that Yates calmly received the news. "He's got that military bearing. He's a model prisoner."
January 11, 2005 - The Monster of Atwater

"He likes killing people; it's his high and he does it for kicks," said Los Angeles Police Department Detective Andy Teague.

Autopsies are pending on the other two men, who were found in another manhole about 100 yards away. Nonetheless, they are searching manholes throughout the city, to rule out the possibility of additional deaths. The investigation is ongoing.

On 31 January 2000, Shipman was found guilty of 15 murders and sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommendation from the trial judge that he should never be released. Two years later, Home Secretary David Blunkett agreed with this recommendation. After his trial, a BMA inquest chaired by Dame Janet Smith decided that there was enough evidence to suggest that Shipman had killed a total of 215 people, about 80 percent of them female. His youngest victim was Peter Lewis, a 41-year-old man. The official inquiry into his career concluded that he had killed 215 people, and that there was "real suspicion" that he had murdered a total of 250. Some reports have claimed that Shipman may have killed more than 400 people. Much of Britain's legislation concerning health care and medicine was reviewed and modified as a direct and indirect result of Shipman's crimes, especially after the findings of the Shipman Inquiry, which began on September 1, 2000 and lasted almost two years.

January 14 , 1976 - Ted Bundy
Few of the sorority sisters could be found at the Chi Omega House. Most were out dancing or at keg parties on campus. It wasn't unusual for the sisters to stay out late, since there was no curfew. In fact, it was pretty normal for the girls to return in the early morning hours. However, none of the sisters was prepared to confront the horror that awaited them back at their sorority house later that night. At 3 AM, Nita Neary was dropped off at the sorority house by her boyfriend after attending a keg party on campus. Upon reaching the door to the house, she noticed it standing wide open. Soon after she had entered the building, she heard some movement, as if someone was running in the rooms above her. Suddenly, she heard the footsteps approaching the staircase near her and she hid in a doorway, out of view. She watched as a man with a knit blue cap (Ted Bundy) pulled over his eyes, holding a log with cloth around it, ran down the stairs and out the door. Nita's first thought was that the sorority house had been burglarized. She immediately ran up the stairs to wake her roommate, Nancy. Nita told her of the strange man she saw leaving the building. Unsure of what to do, the girls made their way to the housemother's room. Yet, before they were able to make it to her room, they saw another roommate, Karen, staggering down the hall. Her entire head was soaked with blood. While Nancy tried to help Karen, Nita woke up the housemother and the two of them went to check on another roommate nearby. They found Kathy in her room alive, but in a horrible state. She was also covered in blood that was seeping from open wounds on her head. Hysterical, Nancy ran to the phone and dialed the police. Police later found two girls dead in their rooms lying in their beds. Someone had attacked them while they slept. Lisa Levy was the first girl that officers found dead. Pathologists who later performed the autopsy on her found that she had been beaten on the head with a log, raped and strangled. Upon further examination, they discovered bite marks on her buttocks and on one of her nipples. In fact, Lisa's nipple had been so severely bitten that it was almost severed from the rest of her breast. She had also been sexually assaulted with a hair spray bottle. Post mortem reports on Margaret Bowman, the other girl found dead, showed that she suffered similar fatal injuries, although she had not been sexually assaulted and she showed no signs of bite marks. She had been strangled by a pair of panty hose that were later found at the scene of the crime. She had also been beaten on the head, yet so severely that her skull was splintered and a portion of her brain was exposed. Neither she nor Lisa Levy showed signs of a struggle. Investigators who interviewed the survivors learned nothing. None of the girls had any memory of the events of that fatal night. Like Levy and Bowman, they too had been asleep when they were attacked. The only witness was Nita Neary, who was able to catch a profile of the killer as he fled. However, the assailant would not travel far before claiming another victim that night.
January 15, 1974 - Dennis BTK Rader
On January 15, 1974, a chilly winter day, 15-year-old Charlie Otero began his afternoon walk home from school. Charlie, his parents, and four siblings had recently moved into a quiet peaceful suburban neighborhood in a small frame house located at 803 North Edgemoor Street. Charlie, happy that another school day had come to an end, walked gingerly up the side walk towards his home. As he opened the front door and walked into the living room, nothing immediately seemed out of the ordinary. "Hello, is anyone home?" he called out into the quiet house. There was no response. Not even a bark from his dog. Such quiet was unusual. With some trepidation, Charlie walked toward his parents' bedroom. A strange feeling of dread welled up inside him.

Just one week after Bundy's arrival in Tallahassee, in the early hours of Super Bowl Sunday on January 15, 1978, two and a half years of repressed homicidal violence erupted. Bundy entered the Florida State University Chi Omega sorority house at approximately 3 a.m. and killed two sleeping women, Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman. Levy and Bowman were bludgeoned and strangled, and Levy was also sexually assaulted. Two other Chi Omegas, Karen Chandler and Kathy Kleiner, were bludgeoned in their sleep and severely injured. The entire episode took no more than half an hour. After leaving the Chi Omega house, Bundy broke into another home a few blocks away, clubbing and severely injuring FSU student Cheryl Thomas.
January 16, 1936 - Albert Fish
The trial of Albert Fish lasted ten days and the jury took less than an hour to reach its verdict. "We find the defendant guilty as charged," the foreman said. Fish was not happy with the verdict, but the prospect of being electrocuted had its appeal to him. A Daily News reporter wrote, "his watery eyes gleamed at the thought of being burned by a heat more intense than the flames with which he often seared his flesh to gratify his lust." Fish thanked the judge for his sentence of death by electrocution. On January 16, 1936, Albert Fish was executed.
January 17, 1897 - MARCEL PETIOT
Marcel André Henri Félix Petiot (January 17, 1897 – May 25, 1946) was a French doctor who was convicted of multiple murders after the discovery of the remains of twenty six people in his home in Paris after World War II. He is suspected of killing more than sixty victims during his life. Petiot was born January 17, 1897 at Auxerre, France. Later accounts make various claims of his delinquency and criminal acts during childhood and adolescence, but is unclear whether they were invented afterwards for public consumption. It should be noted, however, that a psychiatrist diagnosed him as mentally ill on March 26, 1914, and he was expelled from school many times. He finished his education in a special academy in Paris in July of 1915.

January 21, 2007 - Henry Lee Lucas
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The murder trial for Benjamin Watta, 61, has been delayed. Defense attorneys for Watta claim their client is innocent in the 1980 rape and murder of a Seal Beach woman. According to Watta's attorneys, Philip Zalewski and Dan Cook, Texas serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, who previously confessed to the murder, is responsible for the crime. Prosecutors denounce that theory, claiming DNA evidence irrefutably links Watta to the murder. The defense now wants to analyze a blood sample, which was extracted from Lucas in 1983 and has been kept in a freezer in a Texas forensics laboratory. Watta's trial has now been rescheduled for July in order to give the defense team adequate time to have the tests conducted. Henry Lee Lucas died in 2001, while serving a life sentence for multiple counts of murder.

January 22, 1983 - Richard Fran Biegenwald
Police surrounded Biegenwald's home on January 22, 1983, while Dherran Fitzgerald was visiting. Both Biegenwald and Fitzgerald were arrested, and a search of the home revealed a small cache of weapons and drugs. Police confiscated a pipe bomb, handguns, a machine gun, Rohypnol, marijuana and a live puff adder, as well as floor plans for several area businesses. During questioning, Fitzgerald told of a body of a third young woman that Biegenwald had showed him hidden in his garage. Fitzgerald told police that he helped Biegenwald transport the body to his mother's house in Staten Island and bury it in the basement. Fitzgerald went on to say that while he was digging in the basement, he exhumed a body that Biegenwald had buried there some time before. Fitzgerald led police to three other bodies in addition to the two buried in Staten Island. As the investigation went on, police located a ninth victim, William Ward, who was buried in a shallow grave in Neptune City, New Jersey. Ward was a prison escapee whom Biegenwald had befriended. The friendship was apparently short lived, as Biegenwald shot Ward five times in the head and then disposed of the body. Police only had enough evidence to charge Biegenwald with five counts of first degree murder. Fitzgerald turned state's evidence and his testimony was crucial in convicting Biegenwald. In return for his testimony, Fitzgerald was only charged with one count of possession of a weapon and one count of accessory to murder after the fact, and served a 10-year prison sentence. Fitzgerald was released from New Jersey State Prison in 1994.

Following the prison spokesman's announcement that Ted was officially dead, sounds of cheers came from the jubilant crowd and fireworks lit the sky. January 24, 2007 - "Beer Can Killer"
MUMBAI, INDIA — Authorities say reports that an arrest has been made in the "Beer Can Killer" case are false. According to police commissioner AN Roy, they have not apprehended a suspect. "We have not arrested anyone in connection with the recent undetected murder cases, but we are taking the matter very seriously and formed a special team for nabbing the suspect as the modus operandi used by the man is similar in some cases," Roy said in an interview with DNA Mumbai. The "beer can killer" has murdered at least five people in the past month. The perpetrator received his nickname because crime investigators found a unique calling card in the form of a beer can at the scene of each crime. A 90-member task force has been assembled to catch the killer.
January 25 , 1965 - Edmund Kemper
Then, on January 25, two local families were shot to death in their homes. The Santa Cruz area was in a panic, and soon four young men who were camping were all shot at close range in the head. Two more girls out hitchhiking disappeared on February 5: Rosalind Thorpe and Alice Liu. There were no leads whatsoever in their disappearances. Then on February 13, a witness called the police after another shooting of a man in his garden. In short order, they arrested Herbert Mullin. He was tied to most of the shootings, but not to the murders of Cindy Schall or Mary Ann Pesce, or the disappearance of the other hitchhikers. Kidnapping and dismemberment were not part of his MO. Yet Damio indicates that upon Mullin's arrest, the media coverage of the local violence inspired an atmosphere of terror.
January 25 , 2001 - Robert Yates
The life trail of confessed serial killer Robert Lee Yates Jr. is being re-assembled by a Spokane homicide task force to determine whether the willy killer is reponsible for the 15 murders he's been charged with. Once the time line is complete, the task force will host a national conference to share the information with other law enforcement agencies. More than 50 police agencies -- from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Dothan, Alabama -- have expressed interest in Yates as a possible suspect in their unsolved homicides. Detective Sgt. Cal Walker, supervisor of the Spokane task force, said that the date and location of the national briefing haven't been chosen. A site in the central United States is being discussed, so it can be convinient for everyone. The single briefing and information exchange will save time and money for the Spokane task force, which would otherwise have to brief each individual agency separately. The tedious task of tracing the killer's whereabouts for the past four decades is being done through receipts, employment and military records and family members. The job became more difficult when Spokane task force investigators lost their power to subpoena certain records. That power ended after Yates pleaded guilty in Spokane to 13 murders and an attempted murder. But authorities in Pierce County are actively investigating Yates and therefore still have subpoena power. In related news, a Pierce County judge said he will decide next week whether the public will get to know the arguments attorneys for Robert L. Yates Jr. used to try to persuade prosecutors not to seek the death penalty against him. Cowles Publishing Co., which owns the Spokesman Review, is suing for access to records Yates' attorneys submitted to Pierce County Prosecutor Gerry Horne prior to his January 12 decision to seek the death penalty in the aggravated first-degree murder case. Defense attorneys Mary Kay High said release of the documents would impair Yates' ability to get a fair trial and would violate his and his family's right to privacy. High added that she couldn't imagine what the value would be in publicizing the documents, "other than some sort of titillating way of selling newspapers."
January 25, 2007 - Robert Pickton

January 29, 1992 - Jeffrey Dahmer
The jury and two alternates were selected for Jeffrey Dahmer's trial. Only one black person was selected, which caused a protest among the family members. The entire case had seriously polarized the community along racial lines from the moment the public heard Glenda Cleveland's story through the discovery that most of his victims were black. Now, it seemed as though this jury of six white men and seven white women was just another example of racial injustice.
January 30, 1977 - David Berkowitz
Of these three assaults which had occurred in two different areas, the Bronx and Queens, only one bullet had been recovered intact. Consequently, police were not yet able to link these attacks to a single individual. Things quieted for two months. Then in the early hours of January 30, 1977, David Berkowitz went hunting for his next victim. Twenty-six-year-old Christine Freund and her fiance John Diel left The Wine Gallery in Queens around 12:10 A.M. and strolled towards his car. They were too absorbed in each other to observe that man who had been watching them. As they sat in the car, two shots broke the night, shattering the windshield. Christine grabbed her head; both shots had struck her. John rested her head on the driver's seat and ran for help, trying to flag down passing cars, but to no avail. People in nearby homes had heard the shots and had called the police. A few hours later Christine died in the hospital.

Bundy's next victim was Lynda Ann Healy, another University of Washington student. On the night of January 31, 1974, Bundy broke into Healy's room, knocked her unconscious, dressed her in jeans and a shirt, wrapped her in a bed sheet, and carried her away.
January 31, 1998 - Robert Yates
The killings of seven women since late summer -- four of them in the last weeks of '97 -- have resurrected the specter of Seattle's Green River killer. A task force investigating the suspected serial killings is also looking into possible links with 11 other unsolved killings of area women since 1984 -- the year the Green River killings halted at a three-year toll of 49 women. Based on FBI analysis of the crimes authorities announced: "At this time, we're very confident in saying that our individual, or individuals, is in no way connected to the Green River killer."
January 31, 2006 - Unnamed Ex-Postal Worker
A female ex-postal worker opened fire at a huge mail processing plant in Southern California, killing five people and critically wounding another before committing suicide in what's believed to be the deadliest workplace shooting ever carried out by a woman. Authorities found two people dead outside the plant, blocks from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Another body was just outside the door, and a fourth was just inside. Two more bodies -- including that of the killer -- were found farther inside. A sixth person was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. All of the woman's victims were believed to be postal center employees. About 300 people are employed at the Goleta plant where the rampage ocurred. BIZARRE RARE HOME MADE INTERVIEW WITH OJ SIMPSON
Produced in 1996, this rare home video marks one of the most bizarre points of athlete, actor and suspected murderer OJ Simpson’s life. Apparently OJ was frustrated that everybody thought he was guilty, so he produced this video in order to clear his name, reputation…and to find the real killer of Ron and Nicole. That being said, here’s the setup--the majority of the video consists of a one-on-one, no holds barred interview between OJ Simpson and a journalist named Ross Becker. He was allowed to ask any question he wanted (excluding questions about his kids, personal finances, or post trial legal matters) directly to OJ and demand a full response. This interview was billed was “the questions and answers you would have heard if OJ had taken the stand”…After that grilling, OJ personally takes you on the tour of his estate…the scene of the murders…inside his home, and around his yard. He tries to work through bits of incriminating evidence during this tour, hoping that he can be vindicated in the public arena….but he only seems to dig himself deeper. Watch in amazement as this weird spectacle unfolds before your eyes….He definitely should not have made this video.
