REVIEW OF GRINDHOUSE - PLANET TERROR (2007) / THEATRICAL REVIEW
Review by JoeHorror.com
In the late 1960s and all throughout the 70s, there existed a unique underground alternate reality of cinema disparate from the mainstream. It was a world defined by graphic sex and even more graphic violence. Blood, gore, and oodles of gratuitous nudity. All sprinkled with a hearty helping of off-the-wall, over-the-top, completely oddball, extreme, bizarro pulp weirdness. In the suburbs you had the drive-ins, packed with double features for you to glance at while trying to get to second base. In the cities, however, you had theaters that showed movies 'round the clock, back to back. They were trashy. They were sleazy. They were low down, dirty, skanky, dumb fun. Sadly, they were before my time. They were the grindhouses. Take a walk down 42nd St. in New Yawk, New Yawk and you could find a whole world of exploitation movie possibilities beckoning you. Kung-fu flicks. Gory Italian zombie chunkblowers. Nazisploitation and nunsploitation oddities. And slasher films as far as the eye could see.
Tragically, the days of the grindhouse are long gone. Or are they?
Over the last few years there's been a notable boom in the amount of new movies released that try to rekindle the grimy, grungy, nasty spirit of 70s horror. It seems there's a distinct longing for a time when horror movies were... different. Rawer. Grim. Gritty. Real. Cheap but charming. It was only a matter of time before someone tried to bring back the grindhouse era in one sure shot. Well that time is here and that someone is actually two someones. From the pop culture-saturated and wildly warped minds of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes Grindhouse , an epic retro schlock double feature. Its two movies in one, jam-packed with a handful of fake trailers and a boatload of scratched and skipping frames (so as to give the illusion of an old damaged print from a grindhouse era exploitation film), all of it designed to take modern audiences back in time to a world of cinema vastly different than that of the squeaky clean multiplexes of today.
While Quentin managed only to spit out the long-winded and disappointing Death Proof , Robert's offering, Planet Terror is a well-crafted, dense slab of dirty, fiery, tough-as-nails pulp that explodes in your face like a shotgun blast full of officially patented Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks. It's a rollicking rocket ride right into the napalm-scorched eye of adrenaline-slathered splatter.
Planet Terror is a John Carpenter-esque action-horror epic, loaded with explosions, gore, girls, guns, motorcycles, and enough badass-ery to kill a medium-sized elephant. It's an apocalyptic blood-red zombie flick starring Freddy Rodriguez as the oh-so-awesome El Wray (who is instant action figure material, I might add). El Wray is a mysterious loner who has a way with weaponry and comes across as Snake Plissken's Latino cousin. Driving through Texas he winds up stumbling across Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), a rough-and-tumble go-go dancer who walked out on El Wray's gun-spinning ass way back when. Meanwhile a squad of commandos, led by Bruce Willis, gets into a tussle with scientist/opportunist Abby (Naveen Andrews) which leads to chemical spill that unleashes DC2 into the atmosphere. DC2, it seems, happens to be a noxious gas that causes people to mutate into hideous, abscess-covered zombies. Why people in this world keep developing substances like DC2 or Trioxin or the T-Virus is beyond me, but apparently they do it. And, naturally that doesn't end well. Nor does the fact that several "test subjects" (read: savage flesh-hungry infectious zombies) had previously escaped from the facility.
To make a long story short, the infection is quickly spread and Texas soon has got zombies out the ass. El Wray and Cherry Darling, who loses her leg but manages to pick up a machine gun replacement limb along the way, must now stay alive and get the fuck outta dodge, avoiding both the gruesome mutant-zombie population and the sinister commandos who want both DC2 and the survivors of the outbreak for their own nefarious purposes.
Yeah, I just used the word "nefarious." It's not everyday you get that opportunity.
Anyway, El Wray and Cherry are eventually joined by Dakota (Marley Shelton), a literally limp-wristed ex-doctor with an affinity for hypodermic needles who just happens to be on the run from her sadistic psycho husband, Doc Block (Josh Brolin). They're also joined by the local sheriff (Michael Beihn), who seems to have it out for El Wray. Other characters of note are the sheriff's BBQ-cookin' brother J.T. (Jeff Fahey), the Crazy Babysitter Twins (Elise & Electra Avellan), and Earl McGraw (Michael Parks) who, yes, is the same cowboy hat-wearin' police officer featured in both From Dusk Till Dawn and Kill Bill . My personal favorite secondary character though has got to be Tolos. Why? Because he's played by Tom Savini. And I love Tom Savini. Here, good ol' Tom is playing the seeming opposite of the role he played in From Dusk Till Dawn , the whip-snappin', leather-clad biker with the 12-shot codpiece, Sex Machine. Where Sex Machine was a tough, cooler-than-a-frozen-pizza, bad-to-the-bone vampire-slaying outlaw, Tolos is a bumbling, flustered, 9-fingered, zombie-killing deputy.
Together, our rag tag group of heroes shoot, slice, explode, and mini-bike their way through hordes of shambling bloodthirsty freaks and testosterone-overdosed soldiers. The acting is top notch, with Rose McGowan in particular giving an extremely good performance, and the action is non-stop. The film has a suitably dark atmosphere that becomes dirtier and bloodier as the chaos and carnage escalate to astronomical proportions. Nevertheless, Planet Terror still manages to retain a certain endearing sense of whimsy that tells you this movie knows better than to take itself too seriously (which is not something that could be said of Tarantino's own Grindhouse offering, Death Proof ). Planet Terror knows how to deftly alternate between ghoulish and giddy, prompting audiences to lurch back and forth between being grossed out by the sustained moments of graphic gore and being made to laugh out loud thanks to the simple, silly absurdity and tongue-in-cheek mugging the movie manages to throw in without becoming a spoof of itself.
Rodriguez's movie goes for the throat, making pains to show some truly disgusting and cringe-inducing scenes while fluidly peppering the whole stew with an endearing batch of gallows humor. I love the design of the zombies (actually referred to by Rodriguez as "sickos" because they're not technically "zombies"). They're grisly and ugly, a small army of deformed freaks on a rampage. Imagine the Elephant Man with a bad case of acne coated in red slime. Now imagine him mating with Micheal Rooker's character from Slither . Now imagine their offspring. Now imagine 2000 of these fuckers. Bingo, you just got Rodriguez's "sickos" in a nutshell.
Unfortunately, no man is an island and no movie is a faultless masterpiece. Except for Videodrome . You can't fuck with Videodrome. Point is Planet Terror is not perfect. It does have its flaws. Two are in casting. Robert Rodriguez, hear me out. I know you and Tarantino are friends and got some sort of weird man-crush relationship going and all, and I know you were working on Grindhouse together but... did you have a cameo in Death Proof ? No. Least, not as far as I could tell. So why does Tarantino have to have a cameo in Planet Terror ? No offense to the guy, because he's a great director and an even better writer, but acting is not his strong suit. He was a riot as Jimmy in Pulp Fiction , I'll give you that, and he was passable as Mr. Brown in Reservoir Dogs because, hey, he didn't have many lines and he was basically playing himself, and, holy shit, he even gave a pretty goddamn good performance as the perverted Gecko brother in From Dusk Till Dawn . But geeeeeeeee-ZUS is he awful in the role of the imaginatively monickered character "The Rapist" in Planet Terror . I gotta say... Quentin Tarantino cannot do intimidating. It's just too laughable. He tries way too hard and just comes off as ridiculous. And this is in a movie where a stripper kills zombies with a machine gun leg. His best moment is when he gets a figgin' hunk of wood in the eye. That's it. The other casting hiccup is the insertion of pop star Fergie into the movie as Dakota's secret lesbian lover, the doomed-as-doomed-can-be Tammy. While she only has a couple of lines, she delivers them monotonously. You can tell she's really only in this movie to exist as eye candy and zombie fodder (not to mention as a catalyst for Doc Block's breakdown into homicidal rage). I gotta say though, Fergie can't really act (but god bless her heart, as well as the breasts in front of them, because she tries, she really does) and, frankly, her music is disposable, but damned if she ain't a treat to look at. I mean, hey, I'm not a pervert or anything but... wait. No, wait. Oh yeah! Oh, that's right! I am a pervert! And how!
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how well Planet Terror came out. Robert Rodriguez's filmic output is notoriously uneven, jumping back and forth from grade-A triumphs like Sin City to B-side stinkers like The Faculty . With Planet Terror , I feel, Rodriguez has delivered his best work to date. It captures the spirit of the grindhouse era perfectly. It's an over-the-top and balls-to-the-wall serving of Escape From New York -meets- 28 Days Later that I, personally, loved. It does a great job of balancing camp, horror, and action. It's a gun-toting, grue-splattering good time. Furthermore, the score (composed by Rodriguez himself), which is oriented entirely around one central theme re-imagined in a multitude of ways, is catchy as all hell. I've had the damn thing stuck in my head for the past three days.
If I could leave you with just one last word it would be this: Poodle. Why? Because when you think about it, "poodle" is a funny word. If, however, I could leave you with just FOUR last words, they would be these: Go see Grindhouse ... NOW!!

BIZARRE RARE HOME MADE INTERVIEW WITH OJ SIMPSON
Produced in 1996, this rare home video marks one of the most bizarre points of athlete, actor and suspected murderer OJ Simpson’s life. Apparently OJ was frustrated that everybody thought he was guilty, so he produced this video in order to clear his name, reputation…and to find the real killer of Ron and Nicole. That being said, here’s the setup--the majority of the video consists of a one-on-one, no holds barred interview between OJ Simpson and a journalist named Ross Becker. He was allowed to ask any question he wanted (excluding questions about his kids, personal finances, or post trial legal matters) directly to OJ and demand a full response. This interview was billed was “the questions and answers you would have heard if OJ had taken the stand”…After that grilling, OJ personally takes you on the tour of his estate…the scene of the murders…inside his home, and around his yard. He tries to work through bits of incriminating evidence during this tour, hoping that he can be vindicated in the public arena….but he only seems to dig himself deeper. Watch in amazement as this weird spectacle unfolds before your eyes….He definitely should not have made this video.
