Horror Movie Reviews in the Serial Killer Calendar

The year was 1978. I was but a wee lad of nine. I saw a television commercial for a new movie coming out called Magic , in which a ventriloquist's dummy stared directly into the camera and recited one of the most horrifying poems I had ever heard. It was just creepy. It was downright bone-chilling. So of course I begged my mother to take me to this movie. She politely declined. However, being somewhat of a horror geek herself, she saw the movie the first week it was out. I was insanely jealous. The fact that she claimed not to like it only made my determination to see it more intense.

Then the movie disappeared. It bombed at the box office and controversy arose over the commercial that had intrigued me so. Parents were complaining that it was frightening their children, apparently because their children were pussies. Off went the ad, down went the flick.

Now, the wonderful and perhaps omniscient folks at Dark Sky Films have rescued Magic from obscurity, bringing out a fantastic shiny release of one of horror's most underrated and overlooked gems.

It's safe to say Corky (Anthony Hopkins) has some issues. He's a magician who, during his first performance at Amateur Night in a local club, begins screaming at the crowd for not paying attention to his act. Relating the incident to his father, Corky realizes he needs a new angle.

Fast forward a year and a half and Corky is the hottest ticket in town. He has a high powered agent (Burgess Meredith), who has brought the head of NBC to his performance. What turned Corky's career around so dramatically? Corky has a new partner. His name is Fats. And he's a real dummy.

Fats is a freakish looking creation, a ventriloquist's dummy with a giant head. Fats is disrespectful and vulgar, with a high-pitched leering voice. Corky's skill in bringing Fats to life covers over the fact that Corky sucks at magic. In fact, Fats openly mocks Corky for screwing up his tricks, which pleases the audience to no end. The network head is entertained and soon offers Corky a television pilot.

When Corky learns that he'll have to take a medical exam in order to get a TV show, he freaks out. He knows the doctors will claim to find something wrong with him, but Corky knows he's fine. It's a deal-breaker: if he has to take the exam, he won't do the show. He makes a conscious decision to piss his career away. He grabs Fats and flees New York City , taking a cab to his hometown up in the Catskill Mountains.

Corky needs a room and is able to find shelter at a small bed and breakfast run by Corky's old high school love, Peggy Ann Snow (Ann-Margret). Peggy Ann has her own shit to deal with. Her marriage is in trouble. Her husband, Duke (Ed Lauter), is a real piece of work. He doesn't love Peggy Ann and is abusive to boot. Luckily for Corky and Peggy Ann, Duke is out of town. This is what we refer to as "perfect timing." Corky and Peggy Ann rekindle their relationship. And by "rekindle," I mean we get to see Ann-Margret naked.

Peggy Ann decides to leave her husband and go back to New York with Corky. Unfortunately, this is where things start to unravel. Corky's agent has found him and insists that he go back and take the medical examination. Duke returns from his trip and is none too happy to find Corky around. All these pressures take their toll on Corky. When Corky can't deal, there's only one person who can take over for him. And it isn't a person.

The personality of Fats becomes dominant while Corky himself recedes. Soon, Fats is telling Corky how to handle his problems and his newfound romantic interest. According to Fats, there's really only one solution for all of it: murder.

Let's be honest here. It's fun to watch Anthony Hopkins act crazy. Wasn't that the only real pleasure to be derived from the Hannibal Lecter series? The man knows loco. Corky may be Hopkins ' finest performance. The madness only hinted at in the opening bits of Magic become full-fledged insanity towards the end. Hopkins' performance is barely controlled, with his sweaty upper lip and strange little hand gestures saying more about his mental state than hundreds of lines of hack dialogue ever could. Unlike many horror performances, which rely on heavy makeup and an actor bugging his eyes out as far as he can, Hopkins gives Corky a sense of pathetic honesty that makes his increasing reliance on Fats terrifying and tragic.

Ann-Margret became a respectable actress in this movie, as she tries to balance her love for Corky with her growing fear of Fats. You truly feel sorry for Peggy Ann, isolated in the mountains, trapped in a shit marriage and the only way out is with a guy who may be insane. Some people can't catch a break. Her performance actually makes Magic a movie you can watch with a chick. She'll feel sorry for Peggy Ann while you sit and wait for Corky to completely lose his mind.

Speaking of hack dialogue, Magic doesn't have any. This is a high-class affair all the way. The script was written by William Goldman, who also wrote the novel. Richard Attenborough, the same guy who did Gandhi, directed Magic . There's not a B actor to be found. Dignity is the key word here. If you're looking for crazy gore and guts, look elsewhere.

The dignified approach to horror doesn't always sit well with fans of the genre. Understand going in that in Magic , the story is the key. It doesn't follow the ten-minute rule. Most LDF's (Latter Day Fans) may complain about the slow pace of the movie. I pity and curse those with short attention spans. I mean, one can be forgiven for giving up on a piece of lovable crap like Hell of the Living Dead , but don't bail on Magic because it takes its time setting up the action. It's worth it.

The disc itself is wonderful. The transfer is fantastic, especially for a 28 year old film. Surround sound enthusiasts won't be pleased. Magic is presented in the original 2.0 mono mix. That's really all it needs. Nothing explodes, there are no space ships; there wouldn't be anything for your surrounds to do anyway. Featurettes and interviews round out the special features, which include the terrifying TV spot that burned this movie into my mind as a young'un.

Magic is not "ooga-booga" scary; it is "unexpected sound in the middle of the night" scary. Its release now serves as a wonderful reminder of the days when Hollywood took horror seriously, tried to imbue it with some honor and showed it respect, days now gone.
