THE BEST HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS in the Serial Killer Calendar

Does anyone here still remember Fred Durst? You know, that dumb ass shithead from the late, and equally stupid band Limp Bizkit ? This morning, on the shitter, it finally came to me why people liked this band. (Not that I've been thinking about it for any length of time. I read some comment in Maxim Magazine , my favorite bathroom reader, and it sparked an incoherent train of thought.) ANYWAY. It suddenly occurred to me that people liked these dipshits because the band had somewhat catchy tunes, and caterwauled about things that every angst-filled youth could relate to. You know, like that song Break Stuff , where he talks about how hard his life is, how he woke up on the wrong side of bed, and everything sucks, and he wants to break shit? Now see, people can relate to that.

Me? Having been a crazed punk rock kid I have always detested, more like fucking hated, Limp Bizkit . I preferred music that was more pure, less produced, and a lot more raw. In other words, I preferred listening to the Black Flag 7" Nervous Breakdown . The album has a hand drawn picture of a guy backed into a corner with his fists up in the air. A guy with a chair has him pinned into the corner. I felt like that guy in the corner for most of my youth. I would chant the lyrics like they were pages from The Bible :

I'm about to have a nervous breakdown
My head really hurts
If I don't find a way out of here
I'm gonna go berserk, cuz
I'm crazy and I'm hurt
Head on my shoulders
Its going...berserk

I imagine our lead in the Fifth Cord can easily relate to the mighty Black Flag . Andrea Bild (Franco Nero) isn't having a good day. Hell, the guy is in the middle of an all around bad spell. Andrea is an alcoholic and a journalist, so in other words, he's your typical writer. When an acquaintance is attacked at a New Years party he's put on the case to find the would-be murderer. Problem is, the killer isn't as easy to find as you'd think, and soon after bodies start to pile up. If that isn't bad enough, Andrea has a connection with each of the victims, and finds himself the prime suspect. He's put on a veritable tightrope, walking the line between clearing his name, discovering the true killer, and keeping his own ass out of the slammer.

Getting through this intact is going to be a lot harder than he thinks. He doesn't have much in the way of leads. He's hotheaded, likes to slap his girlfriend around, and doesn't have a great working relationship with his editor. It would seem that everything is going against him.

I can almost hear Greg Ginn's screaming guitar revving up in the background. But don't hold that note for too long. Like I love to say about Budweiser, they started out with all the right ingredients, but somewhere along the way something went wrong, very wrong.

This film has the components it needs to succeed as a giallo, but it dropped the ball. The plot is too linear, and the film is too mixed up. The direction has a quite obvious nod to Argento. Maybe too obvious. It's almost as if the director was trying to emulate Argento, as opposed to simply taking influence from the master. And that, folks, is student filmmaking. However, don't take that as me saying this film wasn't made with a skilled hand. This film is skillfully made, it just doesn't push you in the way you expect a giallo to push you. And by that I mean we need a little bit more of everything.

The soundtrack by Ennio Morricone was as lackluster as the film. It was sadly nowhere near to being standout, or one of his best. However, where the film did succeed was in the cinematography. Visually it is a great piece. The cinematography was handled quite masterfully with the lights and darks contrasting wonderfully, and the colors bold and popping. The camera angles were well thought out, and the Italian architecture is beautiful, elegant, and extravagant, which is par for the course in most giallo, and quite honestly, expected. With award winning Vittorio Storaro ( The Bird with the Crystal Plumage , Apocalypse Now ) at the helm as cinematographer can you expect any less? However, great visuals aren't enough to save this film.

Blue Underground does a decent job at the transfer. The piece isn't without some visual defects, but is a fairly solid transfer. The sound balance could have been a bit better between the soundtrack and the dialogue. The dialogue tracks were a bit on the quiet side with minor hissing, whereas the score came through quite clearly, and without any auditory defects. My standard comment about subtitling should also be inserted here. I would like to see the film in the original language with English subtitles. Seriously, I'm soon going to have to write a letter to Mr. Lustig and explain why English dubbing is not the balls.

Overall, this is a fairly straightforward giallo, with a decent story, and a decent lead. You'll recognize some of the cast from more noteworthy giallo films, such as Renato Romano from The Bird with the Crystal Plumage . The Fifth Cord isn't standout work, and is a real toss-up if you'll want to include it in your giallo library. Rent if first and decide for yourself. Me? I'm going to go watch some Dario Argento, and then rock out to a little Black Flag !
